Prevention
According to the old axiom, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
Preventive Structural Inspection
These simple words exemplify why it is essential to structurally test your lighting columns. The introduction of the GN22 AToMS document, which replaced TR22 as the definitive guidance for the lighting industry, very deliberately emphasises the importance and necessity of planned structural inspection and testing, which in turn aids maintenance.
With permission from the Institution of Lighting Professionals, roch ndt services has used extracts from GN22 to guide and encourage you to consider preventive action by looking into the step-by-step risk management guidance contained in GN22. This allows the owner/asset manager to develop a management strategy that optimises available funds and assists in the decision-making process regarding priorities and programmes.
Lighting columns make up the majority of minor structures with a variety of protective applications and consist of various construction configurations and wall thickness. Corrosion, foundation failure, and more can lead to catastrophic failure, and thereby poses a significant health and safety risk to the public as well as a threat to critical infrastructure. Lighting columns are also subject to attachments that, if outside the supporting design parameters, can lead to the minor structure becoming overloaded, which can also result in premature and catastrophic failure.
For these reasons, preventive testing is imperative. GN22 considers the lighting support as a structural element of the lighting asset, and accordingly assesses the impact of deterioration using principles of structural engineering. It provides the asset manager with guidance regarding full life management of their lighting assets through the adoption of sound inspection, assessment, and testing practises - and enables the development of a full life asset management strategy, condition assessment strategy, and producing-risk assessment strategy.
